Frequently Asked Questions

  Q

Why are some queries faster than others?

We cache results so subsequent requests for the same query are serviced from the cache.

  Q

How often does the top 5 list get evaluated?

It is re-evaluated and updated every time a new query is submitted.

  Q

How is the number of unique queries defined?

Every time you submit a request we update our database, and your rank is relative to the current database size at that time. Future requests for the same query might yield a different ranks as the database grow over time with the input of users.

  Q

Is the processing time a function of the size of the number of phone lines?

Yes, the larger the number the more pages we need to fetch and filter.

  Q

From the distribution one can often deduce someone's town of origin, isn't that infringement on privacy?

We are very sensitive to the privacy of individuals. We only make use of public records and simply display them in a slightly interesting format.

  Q

What else can the distribution reveal?

It can serve as a starting point for a family genealogy. Sociologists, etymologists and linguists may also find the data of interest as it captures patterns of migration, stories behind names etc...

  Q

How can I get a complete distribution (instead of the top5) for my governorat?

Simply drop us a line to that effect using the contact us form and we will be happy to e-mail you the most recent raw data of the distribution. We are also soliciting submissions for distributions with interesting properties (i.e., uniform across all the governorats, or one where its mean is equal to its variance, etc..)

  Q

What is the best way to report suspected bugs?

Please report any error you may encounter via the contact us form.
